AKINS / ETIENNE

I have traced my AKINS family back to Francois ETIENNE born circa 1674 in Courtemaiche (Bern) Switzerland, he married Catherine BESANCON circa 1697 in Courtemaiche (Bern) Switzerland. They had a son, Jean Jacques ETIENNE born 10 April 1710 in Courtemaiche (Bern) Switzerland. He married Jeanne Marguerite VALLAT who was born on 16 November 1721 in Damphreux (Bern) Switzerland. They were married on 25 January 1746 in Courtemaiche (Bern) Switzerland. They had a son, Jean Philippe ETIENNE born 26 Feburary 1747 in Courtemaiche. Jean was married twice, first to Marie PICARD and second to Maria-Anne Franecois FRANCAIS. Maria was born 9 Janurary 1770 in Etueffont-Haut (Belfort) France. The eldest son of Jean and Maria Anne, Joseph Marie ETIENNE, came to America from France with his wife, Marieanne MOULIN and two children arriving in New York on 28 May 1828 on the U.S. ship Henri IV. Joseph served in the Army of Napolean the Great for about eight years and was at the Battle of Waterloo in 1814. Joseph was born in Courtemaiche, Helvetic Republic (Switzerland), on 24 September 1799. Marieanne was born in Romagny, France 23 December 1797 and is the daughter of Nicolas Moulin and Anne Marie Heidet from Romagny, France. Nicolas Moulin was born in Colmar, France about 1759. Anne Marie was born 1 December 1769 in Rougemont, France. She arrived on the ship Henri IV in 1828 with her parents, Jean Jacques HEIDET and Marie Barbe DESCOMBES. Joseph ETIENNE and Marieanne MOULIN were married 26 November 1826 in Romagny (Belfort) France.

Joseph and Marieanne arrived in the United States in New York City, then traveled to (Stark) Ohio, settling in the city of Canton. From there they went to Robertsville and then to Alliance, all in Stark County. Many of the families, Etienne, Moulin, Heidet etc., from the Belfort area in France settled in Stark County. Joseph and Marieanne were Catholic and were members of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Canton, Ohio. Later they were members of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Alliance, Ohio. Joseph was a tailor and outlived all but one of his ten children.

Philip Louis, the sixth child of Joseph and Marieanne, married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth CAPPON, 29 June 1857; then to Louisa HAIDET, 3 June 1871. Louisa's parents are Joseph Frank HEIDET and Margaret BULLION.

There were no children from the second marriage.

Celestine Lester, third child of Philip and Mary, was married twice. First to Laura Ann GASKILL, 2 March 1886, then to Mary PURDY on 27 December 1892.

Glen Isaac, the child of Celestine and Laura, married Mary Minnetta BOSSERT on 29 Jul 1911 in Columbiana (Columbiana) Ohio. Glen and Mary had the following children:

Clem William AKINS Sr. was born 7 October 1913 in Alliance (Stark) Ohio. He married Clyda Fay DRENNAN, who was born 5 December 1920 in Cohay (Simpson) Mississippi. They were married on 15 January 1942 at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville (Cumberland) North Carolina. Clem died 26 December 1992 in Canton (Stark) Ohio, Clyda died 23 February 2008 in Huntsville (Madison) Alabama. Clem and Clyda are buried in Highlands Memorial Gardens, Beloit (Columbia) Ohio.

Clem William AKINS Jr. was born 1 September 1942 in Fort Bragg, Fayettville (Cumberland) North Carolina. He married Frances Jeanette BRISTOW on 17 March 1962 in Los Lunas (Valencia) New Mexico. Frances was born on 6 July 1943 in Anadarko (Caddo) Oklahoma.

Clem William AKINS III was born 8 September 1962 on Sandia Base, Albuquerque (Bernalillo) New Mexico. He married Annette Kay ARMSTRONG on 19 December 1982 in Huntsville (Madison) Alabama, they have since divorced. Annette was born on 28 May 1962 in Wichita (Sedgwick) Kansas. He married Pamela LAMB in October 2004 in Tennessee.

There are no children from the second marriage. Pamela has three children from her first marriage.

Janette Angela AKINS was born 9 November 1964 in Alliance (Stark) Ohio. She married Francis Collier RAWLS III on 3 November 1990 in Huntsville (Madison) Alabama. Francis was born 26 July 1964 in Huntsville (Madison) Alabama.

Wyatt Drennan AKINS was born 13 December 1967 in Munchweiler an der Rodalb (Rhineland-Palatinate) West Germany. He married Lisa Michelle THOMAS on 2 September 2006 on Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville (Madison) Alabama. Lisa was born 29 June 1978.
